Sing with Us: 6th-12th Grade
Choirs for Older Singers
CCSA offers engaging choral experiences for students in grades 6–12 who want to grow as singers, performers and leaders. Whether your student is new to choir or already has years of experience, our ensembles provide a welcoming environment where young people can build and develop vocal skills, make lasting friendships and experience the joy of making music together.
All incoming 6th–12th grade singers participate in a stress-free voice placement to help determine the ensemble that best fits their current experience and goals. Our team is here to make the process supportive, encouraging and fun from the very beginning.

Voice Placement FAQ
What happens during a Voice Placement? Singers do not need to bring a prepared selection; our directors are looking for potential, not perfection!

1. Get to know each other
Your voice placement will begin with a relaxed conversation. Our directors would love to learn a little about you—what brought you to CCSA, any singing experiences you have had, and what you hope to gain from being part of the chorus.
There are no right or wrong answers. This conversation simply helps our directors get to know you, understand what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and begin thinking about the ensemble in which you may thrive.
2. Ask Questions about CCSA
Absolutely! Your voice placement is also an opportunity for you and your family to learn more about the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio.
You are welcome to ask about rehearsals, performances, musical styles, time commitments, the different CCSA ensembles, or anything else that will help you feel prepared. We want you to leave with a clear sense of what being a CCSA singer is like and feel comfortable about the experience ahead.
3. Director-led exercises
Our directors will gently guide you through a few simple singing and musical activities. These help us become familiar with your voice and understand how you naturally respond to music.
You may be invited to:
- Sing a short passage from a familiar song
- Echo melodies or musical patterns
- Explore different notes and vowel sounds
- Clap, move, or respond to a rhythm
- Sing alongside other singers in a small-group activity
Singers do not need to prepare a selection in advance. If you do not have a song in mind, our directors will happily provide one and guide you through the process.
We are not expecting a polished performance. We want to hear your natural voice, notice your musical strengths, and discover how we can help you continue growing.
4. Director Considerations
Throughout the placement, our directors will listen carefully and consider the whole singer—not just the notes they sing. This may include:
- Vocal Range and Quality: Where your voice feels most natural and comfortable
- Musical Response: How you hear and respond to melody, rhythm, and musical guidance
- Readiness to Participate: Your comfort with trying new things and engaging in the process
- Potential for Growth: The musical skills and confidence we can help you develop
- Ensemble Placement: The group in which you are most likely to feel supported, appropriately challenged, and successful
Prior singing experience is not required. Every singer arrives with different strengths, experiences, and ways of expressing themselves. Our directors approach each placement with care, encouragement, and a genuine desire to help every child have a positive musical experience.
5. Selection and Placement
Following the voice placement, our directors will thoughtfully consider which CCSA ensemble will provide the best environment for your current voice, age, musical experience, and stage of development. They will also consider the musical needs and structure of each ensemble.
You will receive your placement information shortly afterward. Our goal is to recommend an ensemble where you can feel welcomed and supported while continuing to develop your voice, musicianship, confidence, and love of singing.
If you or your family have questions about the placement recommendation, we welcome the opportunity to talk with you and help you better understand the factors that shaped the decision.
